John F. Baran, 73, of King George, VA, departed this life on November 24, 2021. Born September 21, 1948, in Detroit, MI, John grew up in South Bend, IN, with his parents and seven siblings. John received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and an MBA from the College of William and Mary. He dreamed of designing automobiles, but instead turned to a lifelong career supporting DoD/Navy/Joint Warfare government. Three years into his career he was the lead engineer on a project for the USS Nimitz CVN-68. John later transitioned to BAE Systems where he supported government contracts for 28 years. His senior engineering leadership supported projects including the Vertical Launching System (VLS), Standard Missile (SM), and Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense. Collectively, John spent 50 years on high profile programs at NSWCDD. Five years ago, John accepted a position with Parsons Corporation looking to transition to the life of a retiree with his wife Linda and spend time with family. He loved his work and was dedicated to his colleagues and the organizations he supported and only just retired November 19. As a devoted father and husband, John’s family knew him for his love, humor, integrity, and support. John was known to work a crowd, he enjoyed sharing stories with new and old friends, and loved talking sports and cars. He was also a mentor to his children, grandchildren, and colleagues, quietly encouraging them to keep going, never stop learning. Coming from a large family, gatherings were endearing to him. His happy place was spent with his wife, family, and friends, enjoying a good meal and a good laugh. John was an avid golfer and enjoyed boating, but nothing surpassed his passion for Purdue University sports and Detroit Lions. He was a gift of knowledge and a selfless man. His presence and distinguished laugh will be missed. John was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Charles Baran, Jr., mother, Audrey Baran, brother, “Chap” Baran, and Betsy Baran. He is survived by his wife, Linda Baran, and children, Ginger (Wade) Palmer, John Baran Jr., Megan (Darian) Weaver, and Philip Jackson. Grandchildren, Katie, Annie, Emma, and Lily Palmer, Wade Palmer V, Skyla Ketchel, and Adelyn Jackson, and siblings, Ginny (Dennis) Bamber, Terry (Steve) Sult, Laure Brunson, Julie (Bill) Bachman, Bridget (Michael) Kiefer and Kate (Curtis) Warchol. “Remembering John Baran in Words, Thoughts and Prayers” will be held December 11, at 1:00 p.m., at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 5486 St Pauls Rd, King George, reception to follow at the Baran residence.
