Harold Spain peacefully passed away Friday, September 1, 2023, at the age of 92 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Last February, after living 36 years in Herndon, Virginia, he relocated to North Carolina to be closer to his daughters. Harold retired a Colonel after 27 years of distinguished service in the United States Army Signal Corps. He proudly served at more than 15 duty stations both domestic and abroad including Korea, Vietnam, and NATO Headquarters. During his military career, the dedicated serviceman received many commendations, decorations, and was selected to be one of only five participants in a pilot program for active military to earn a master’s degree; Harold earned his master’s in Telecommunication Operations from George Washington University. Upon retiring from the United States Army, he had a second career managing the development and installation of satellite earth stations for GTE Corporation. Upon full retirement, Harold enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and being a golf Starter at Algonkian Park in Loudoun County, Virginia. Harold was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Ruth Anne; his parents Roy and Ruie Spain; his brothers Roy Jr. (Gladys), James Thomas “JT” (Maurice), and Alton “Red” (Becky) Spain. He is survived by his current wife of 18 years Jacquelyn Spain; his daughters Cynthia Leonard (Don), Judith Ferguson (Kimball), granddaughter Monica Clevenger (Steve), great grandchildren Zoe and Logan, and stepsons Thomas Lockhart (Dawn) and John Lockhart (Tracy).
