Mrs. Ruby Elaine (Durbin) Bell, age 71, a resident of Birmingham, AL, passed away on January 26, 2024, at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born on November 12, 1952, in Guston, KY, to William Ruby Durbin and Frances Viola (Reynolds) Durbin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, 1SG Edward “Ed” Quitman Bell II (US Army Retired), her parents, and a brother, Roger Michael Durbin.
Survivors include, a daughter, Amy Bell Nelson (Terry) of Birmingham; 2 grandchildren, Gabriel “Gabe” Raymond Nelson and Alexandra “Lexi” Paige Nelson of Birmingham; 2 sisters, Joan Marie Bowman and Carol Jean Hurst of Ekron, KY; and 2 brothers, William Morris Durbin of Louisville, KY and Robin Marshall Durbin of Nicholasville, KY.
Ruby graduated from Meade County High School in 1970 and remained in the Brandenburg, KY area until her marriage to Ed in 1988. Shortly after their marriage, Ed was reassigned from Fort Knox, KY to Fort Richardson, AK, where they remained for 5 years before returning to the “Lower 48” where Ed was stationed at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL.
Ruby loved children and operated a day care in her home on post at Fort Richardson from 1988-1993. Many of the children she cared for became like her own and she always remained grateful for the time spent with her “kids” and that their parents entrusted them to her care.
She will be interred alongside her husband at Arlington National Cemetery with graveside services not yet scheduled.
A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held at the Meade County Senior Citizens Center, located at 1200 Old Ekron Road, Brandenburg, KY 40108, on Sunday, February 18, 2024, beginning at 3:00 p.m. and ending at 6:00 p.m., with friends and family welcome to stop by anytime to reminisce.
