A celebration of James’s life will be held on October 5, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Colonial Beach Community Center, 717 Marshall Ave, Colonial Beach, VA 22443. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor James’s memory may make contributions to the Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department, the Colonial Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, or a charity of their choice. |

James Lewis Steffey passed away on August 10, 2024, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was the beloved son of Lewis Conley Steffey and Helen Balderson Steffey. James proudly served his country as an Army veteran and military policeman (SP4) with the 512th MP Company at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, from March 1960 to March 1963. After his military service, he returned home to Colonial Beach, Virginia, where he joined the Colonial Beach Police Department. In 1966, James began his long career at Dahlgren Public Works, where he worked until his retirement in 1994. Post-retirement, James found joy working alongside his brother Ralph in construction and in his unique pastime of counting squirrels. In 1966, James married Peggy Louise Price, with whom he celebrated 58 years of marriage this past January. An enthusiastic athlete, James played second base and catcher for the Colonial Beach Sabres from 1976 until 1994. He was a proud member of the Eagles Post 4315, an avid crabber, and a devoted family man who cherished time spent with loved ones. James also enjoyed live music and was known for sneaking sweets to his grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Helen Steffey; his brother, George Steffey; and his sisters, Louise Steffey Burleson and Barbara Steffey Hallenbeck. He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Louise Steffey; his son, Christopher Steffey, and his wife, Angela Redden Steffey of Shepardstown, WV, along with their children, Rowan and Isabella Steffey; and his son, Brian Steffey, and his wife, Martha Alley Steffey of Oakton, VA, along with their children, Aubrey Helen and Rory Kathryn Steffey. James also leaves to cherish his memory, beloved siblings Beatrice Steffey Rose of Charlottesville, VA, Ralph Steffey of Colonial Beach, VA, Linda Steffey Fitzmaurice and her husband, Shaun Fitzmaurice of Richmond, VA, Jackie Steffey Jones and her husband, Rodney Jones of Montross, VA, and Michael Steffey and his wife, Yvonne Steffey of Arizona; as well as many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
