Damon Lee Gray, Sr., 69 of Bowling Green, went to be with the Lord in Heaven on Friday, October 22, 2021 while at home surrounded by his loving family. Damon was born in West Virginia and at the age of 17 moved to the Sparta area of Caroline County. At 18, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam over the course of his 6 year military stent. After his military service Damon made his final home place in Sparta in 1981 where he has spent the last 40 years building a home and raising a family who loved him dearly. Damon had many business ventures throughout his life to include owning and operating Sparta General Store and Progressive Home Builders in Caroline County. He also served as post commander of the VFW in Bowling Green for a period of time. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert James Gray; his mother and father Raymond and Annabelle Gray; two brothers, Ray and Charles Gray and his sister, Thelma Jones. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Hall Gray; three children, Michelle Chewning (David), Jennifer Fields and Damon Gray, Jr.; two brothers, George and Lionel Gray; a sister, Sue Duncan; seven grandchildren, Davy Chewning, Gracie Chewning, Brooke Fields, Brittany Fields, Bubba Fields, Robert Fields and Aubry Minor, and one great grandson, Brantley Whittaker; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, in Shumansville, VA with interment immediately following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service for visitation. Reception to follow in the family home afterwards for friends and family.
