I met Tony Arnade at the University of Florida when we were working on our Masters Degrees in Agricultural Economics. I remember Tony as being an excellent student but mainly I remember him being a sweet, caring, engaging, funny, and thoroughly off-the-wall guy. He was so lovable! He began to date my roommate, Elaine Grigsby, and, frankly, at first I thought they were just too different to fall for each other. But really she had all of Tony’s qualities; just as brilliant and lovable …. and off-the-wall. (Elaine, I owed a lot of my sanity during that time to you-you were a mentor and dear friend.) I am so glad that Tony and Elaine had so many happy years together, traveling, accomplishing great things, and having fun – so many wonderful memories!

I worked with Carlos at ERS for years before covid/the ERS move and I always enjoyed the vibrancy he brought to the office. He was a real expert in his field and very creative as an economist, but I especially admired how he always had a take on the latest issue. He was bold about making predictions about agricultural issues (cultured meat, trade with China, bioengineered food, and anything else) and was game to talk about anything. I also really enjoyed hearing stories about growing up in rural Virginia and his big family. He made the day more interesting and fun. I will miss him.
