For nearly ten years, the gentleman who I respectfully and affectionately refer to as Papa Joe, never once treated our family with anything but kindness and an offer of a little glint in his eye. We were only inside his home a handful of times, and he may bave entered our home on one of two occasions. Most of our conversations took place in our driveway or his front yard. On many occasions we would run into each other in the Colonial Beach Food Lion parking lot Our connection was through his son and our eldest grand sprout, who met “by chance”, in Joe’s homey living room, formed a fast acquaintance, and through the years, developed a special relationship that continutes to this day.. Not long after Bill and Chelsea met in Joe’s home, our daughter, Chelsea’s mom, was in a life-threatening hit and run in North Carolina. Gentleman that Papa Joe raised, Bill stepped up, offered to do anything that Chelsea and our family might need, including riding to the Carolina Medical Center until we could find out what all was needed of usamilys a family. Our daughter, Chelsea and our youngest grand sprout had a sweet little family dog named Rudy, Because we had no way to keep him, we tried desperately to find a suitable home for little Rudy. Papa Joe and son Bill, graciously offered to take Rudy into their home, bringing him to visit a couple of times a week at least, and Rudy soom became a part of Papa Joe’s safe and warm home. I feel Joe and I and our families had a mutual respect and love for one another. I say with deeply felt sadness that Joe left an empty space, but cherished memories with us and with many of the folks of Colonial Beach, Va.
