Carrol: We both regret that we didn’t know about your loss. Jimmy and I go back nearly 77 years as cousins and in later years Masonic brothers. He will be missed by so many whose lives he touched. The prayers of the whole Stephens (Stevens, in a nod to Aunt Slydelle) clan are asking for you and the family to be at peace, knowing that he and each of you are cradled in the arms of our Savior.

I met Coach my second year of high school. I joined the drill team first and realized that I had literally been starting off on the wrong foot, so I decided to try out the rifle team. I embraced the new challenge of a coach who had a towering reputation (he was the best and that was evident from the whispers when we showed up to a match). I unknowingly found my second family. I spent the next couple of years under his wing drinking black coffee, eating celebratory Mama Richbourg dips, waking up at the crack of dawn to get hot brass stuck in the collar of my hoodie, finding the most backwoods BBQ joints in every state, listening to him and his stories- equal parts history, his experiences, and plenty of insight that I still use in my daily life. Some people said that he scowled a lot when he was deep in thought, but if you poked his “bubble” you’d be met with an arm crossed chuckle and a pat on the back that could cut up any tension on the line. He was never a stranger after I graduated and my kids have grown up hearing the stories about the Santa Claus that taught me about mental bubbles, if you can- order the “trashcan” pizza, always find a way to pursue your dreams in spite of any obstacle, and live a rich life. Jim had a full life and he shared that with as many people as he could. He also taught me that all of the good you leave in your legacy begins with the kids and while I am not blessed with a long white beard and a red suit- I still try to give good advice, support and a smile to the ones that I meet. Coach will be very much missed, but I’m grateful for the memories and the love he had for us.

Saddened to hear of Mr Morgan’s passing. He had such a profound impact on so many of us during his time as our 4-H shooting coach. His guidance, patience, and unwavering dedication went far beyond teaching us about marksmanship—it taught us life lessons about focus, respect, and perseverance. Mr Morgan had a way of making everyone feel valued and capable, no matter where they started. I will always carry the memories of his encouraging words and the lessons he instilled. Please know that my thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. Mr Morgan will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by all of us who had the privilege of learning from him!!! RIP Sir!!! God Speed

The world is a much smaller place without Mr. Morgan . First met him at FRGC back in early 1990’s at a Garand clinic when I was too old to play ball anymore but interested in organized shooting . Jim, Col. Bill , and that corps of folks were responsible for the many thousands of hours of fun with a gun enjoyed since. Years later was able to introduce my nephews to to High Power with the same great teachers. I never was as good as many of his “students” but none enjoyed it any more, always a pleasure for the bride and me to run into Jim . Had a couple opportunities to visit at his home(with Tom Hudson) and chat with Jim and Carrol . Kept up a bit with him through VFEMI , wished I’d known him better, but always had the highest respect for him and his drive to assist young folks. He was irreplaceable and will be missed. Sincerest condolences, George and Carolyn Venable

As the parents of one of Coach Morgan\’s early junior high power shooters let us express are most sincere sympathies to the Morgan family. He brought to these young men strength of character and the will skill and desire to exceed not only on the firing line, in the pits and the stamina to exceed in their future pursuits. His wife Carrol was not only his rock and loving inspiration, but a friend to all who know her.
