I worked in the office with Joe at AVEL and then drove for him when Bill Biggs left. I believe he and I were the last guys to leave AVEL Central (along with CAPT Smith) in April 1972. I’m glad I got the meet up with him at the reunion in DC in 2013. May he rest in peace.

Dedicated to his job. Observed him daily, he didn’t waste his time or yours. Met him at a reunion. A good soldier. Still remember him.

I was lucky enough to fly with Matos I never forget our flights on the Beaver. He helped me out a lot when we were in Phu Lou, I have a lot to thank him for. The last time I saw him he presented me with our Jeeps license plate. I drove him around quite a bit, I was lucky to know him.

Joe was my Commanding Officer at Avel Central Phu Loi, Vietnam 1971-1972. Joe and Joan came to several Avel Reunions and it was so good to meet them and to see Joe (Major Matos back at Avel Central) after all the years. Rest in peace.

So sorry to hear of his passing. I served as his executive officer for approximately six months 71-72. It was an honor to know him and work with him. When we had our reunion in the DC area he and Joan participated. Was great to see him and meet his wonderful lady. A s Jack said, he was a good man! Bob Smith, Major, US ARMY RET
