Lt. Col. Joseph A. Matos, Jr. (U.S. Army Ret.) of Springfield, VA, passed away peacefully on the morning of February 6, 2025, at the age of 88.
Born on December 24, 1936, in Johnson City, NY, Joe was the son of the late Joseph and Veronica (Kudgus) Matos.
A proud graduate of Forest City High School, Joe pursued higher education with determination throughout his life, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University, a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, and a Master’s Degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.
Joe dedicated his career to the U.S. Army, earning his commission as an officer in June 1958. In over 20 years of honorable service, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and distinguished himself as a flight school graduate and instructor. His assignments took him across the globe, including Stuttgart, Germany, South Korea, and two tours in Vietnam. His bravery and leadership earned him numerous commendations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, three Air Medals, and the Bronze Star Medal. His service was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his country. After his military career, Joe continued to work as a contractor for several programs critical to the Department of Defense.
Joe was an avid Washington Redskins/Commanders fan, holding season tickets for over 20 years. He also deeply loved sailing, cherishing every moment aboard his beloved sailboat, Southern Comfort. After his family, one of Joe’s greatest joys and accomplishments was the home he built in St. Inigoes, MD—a place that became a cherished retreat filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Joan (Punter) Matos; his three children, Judy, Julie, and Jay (Kim); four grandchildren, Cole, Isabella (Brandt), Tori, and Alex; brothers James (Janet) and Robert; and sister Rita.
