He is survived by his wife Barbara Lee Woodward Croson his son Casey (Nishat), and 3 sisters.
As a young man he served his country as a medic in the U S Army and was stationed in Germany, where he became acquainted with his Grandmother and her family.
A graduate of the Culinary Institute, he was a chef at several restaurants in Nags Head, including Port O Call and the Weeping Radish.
He retired as a long time driver from SuperValu. After retirement he became a Master Gardener and also volunteered at the State Fair of Virginia.
Fireworks, wood working, photography and stained glass were just a few of his interests. He had a spirit of adventure and never met a roller coaster he didn’t like. He and his son Casey enjoyed many road trips to seek new thrills, oftentimes with music that ‘wasn’t loud enough until the windows shook.’
Doug was never happier than when he could make someone else laugh or smile, and would delight in inflicting his humor on others whenever possible. He was thoughtful and would do anything for a friend or his family.
A celebration of his life is planned at a later date.
