In the late 1950’s, Doris and Leonard opened an upscale American-style restaurant in northern Virginia, The Country Squire. The restaurant became renown for hosting wedding receptions in its unique banquet facilities. Doris earned a reputation as the original wedding coordinator, spending hours with each bride to bring personal touches to every reception. The restaurant was closed in 1991 after Leonard’s death and Doris moved to King George permanently.
A woman truly ahead of her time, Doris ran a successful business full-time and raised 3 children. She believed in equality for all and that women could accomplish anything. She had a boundless love of life, family, animals and her legacy, Strawberry Hill as well as her Washington Redskins. Her door was always open to her many friends, family, and furry friends needing a quiet refuge with an open heart and helping hands.
Doris is survived by her 3 children, Cassandra Hoppe, Roxane Blackburn, and Russell Johnson and his wife Nanci Johnson and her 5 grandchildren, Meghann Taibl, Trent Blackburn, Ryan Taibl and his wife Amy, Nicole Jordan and her husband D.J. Jordan, and Ian Johnson.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 22, 2022 at 11:00 at her home, Strawberry Hill preceded by a viewing at 10:00. The burial on the property will place immediately thereafter. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that, for those who wish to honor Doris, donations be made to the King George Animal Rescue League.
