George Walker Box, 72, died peacefully after complications from a previous surgery on October 8, 2022.  Born in Martinsville, Virginia on October 1, 1950, Walker was the son of the late George Henry Box, Jr. and Spotswood Walker Box. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, George Walker Box, Jr.

A graduate of Virginia Episcopal School (1969), Walker was a long-time and devoted member of the Board of Trustees and served as the Chair of the Buildings & Grounds Committee. He received a degree in textiles from North Carolina State University (1973), where he was also a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Upon graduating, Walker immediately went to work with Bassett-Walker Inc. in Martinsville, Virginia.  He was the Vice President of Sales until 1986 when he worked with several colleagues to found Pluma, Inc., a textile company in Eden, NC. Walker served as Vice President of Sales at Pluma until he was named Chairman in 1996.  After Pluma, Walker continued to work in the textile and apparel industry on special projects. Upon retirement from this first career, Walker moved to Essex County to enjoy Brooke’s Bank, the historic home he had passionately restored. While in Essex County, he founded a historic restoration company focused on projects across Virginia. Walker spent his life instilling in his family a passion for the natural world, antiquities and the extraordinary gift of friendship with people from all walks of life.  Walker loved his schools, his farm and had a particular affinity for cultivating daffodils, and yet his greatest and most enduring gift is as a loyal and generous father and friend.

Walker is survived by daughter, Mary Spotswood Box Underwood (Joseph), three grandsons, George Edward, Henry Raulston and Harrison Walker Underwood, of Essex County, Virginia, brother Kemp Dudley Box (Elizabeth) of Columbia, SC, nephew Samual Kemp Box, niece Elizabeth Fields Box, and his beloved companion, Roberta Thompson Garnett of Essex County, Virginia.
