Roger Gale Bunting, 78, of Woodford VA passed away at his home on Sunday October 16th. He was born in Fayetteville, WV on August 6, 1944 to George Washington Bunting and Ora Gazel (Asbury) Bunting. Raised in Richwood, WV Roger graduated from Richwood High School in 1963. Upon graduating, he moved to VA and took a position as Cartographer with the Coast & Geodetic Survey before moving on to the Department of Commerce where he worked until retiring in 1999.

Roger raised 5 children and was a devoted father and grandfather. He held family above all else and his siblings were his very best friends. As patriarch of the Bunting clan, Roger had hosted the family reunion at his farm every July since 1980.

Nicknamed “Boss Hogg”, he would keep a crowd in stitches with his quick wit and endless one-liners. He held a lifelong bond with his classmates from RHS Class of ’63, and enjoyed his regular trips home to Richwood to visit family and friends. A fishing trip to the Outer Banks was one of his favorite ways to pass the time. He was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge in Vienna, VA, and Admiral in the Cherry River Navy. To say he was one of a kind is an understatement. He lived life to the fullest degree and always on his own terms.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents George W. and Ora G. Bunting, sister Emma Isabelle (Paul) Martin, brother Jennings Bunting, sister Lena Imogene Beal, brother Lyle (Ruth) Bunting, and sister-in-law Diane Bunting.

He is survived by his son Christopher (Diva) Bunting, son Matthew Bunting, son Travis (Carey) Bunting, son Thomas (Eden) Dunbar, daughter Michelle (Jeff) Powers; his ten grandchildren, Brewster Bunting, Stevie Bunting, Casey Bunting, Karissa Strosnider, Jacob Bunting, Airyan Bunting, Brandon Dunbar, Victoria Dunbar, Jeffrey Powers and Joseph Powers; his four great grandchildren Waylon Boyd, Wells Boyd, Carter Powers, and Colton Powers; his sister-in-law Kathryn Bunting, brother Maynard Bunting, sister Ruby (Pete) Lloyd, and brother James (Nellene) Bunting; his girlfriend Diane Platt and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

“A limb has fallen from the family tree that says grieve not for me…remember the best times, the laughter, the song, the good life I lived while I was strong.”
