Our precious Mother Mamie Adelaide Stone, Also Loving known as “GROUCH” gained her wings and went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her loved ones at the home of her daughters Dot and Ida on Saturday, Nov. 12, born on Oct. 13, 1922 to the late Foster & Edmonia Jenkins.  She was born and lived in Shiloh a district within King George County all her life.

Mamie was preceded in death by her parents, her son Clyde, brothers Raymond, William and Pete, sisters Gladys and Dolly, Grandsons Jimmy and Gary and Granddaughters Yvonne and Melinda

She is Survived by her children Ida Williams, Dorothy Crabtree, Hazel Massey, Kenneth (Sue), Donald (Megan), Shirley Askew (Tyrone), Anita Mullins (Pete) Gene (Trish) 12 Grandchildren, 29 Great-Grandchildren, 40 Great-Great Grandchildren, 19 Step-Grandchildren, 21 Step Great-Grandchildren and 4 Step Great-Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mamie lived in a home all her adult life on Round Hill Road that her Dad and Brothers helped build.  There she raised her 9 children where 7 of her 9 children were born at home.  She was happiest in her home and around her family.  On Most weekend her Children and Grandchildren flocked to Grandma Grouch’s, she enjoyed cooking for her large family and watch them play baseball in the field and race their cars to see who’s was the fastest this week, ride horses, bikes and play jokes on whoever they could! Many great times and memories growing up at Grandma Grouch’s!   She enjoyed growing and working in her garden, canning vegetables, staying busy, always on her feet!  You’d usually spot her taking a cup of coffee out to one of her boys!  “Her Babies!”

Mamie worked at Morganstern Pants Factory in Fredericksburg from 1964 until they closed in 1986,  After getting off work she’d go to work in the evening as a custodian for King George Schools at the Old Ralph Bunch School Board Office and worked at the Elementary, Middle and High School over the years before going part-time at the School Board Office.  She officially retired in 2003 at the Middle School at the age of 81 when she began losing her eye sight.

As she lost her eye sight and had to become dependent on her children she spent her weekends the last several years at her home with her son Kenneth and daughter-in-law Sue, they had became one of her caregivers.  Her Daughter Dorothy has been her caregiver since 2006 and had promised her she would not go to a nursing home, She made good of her word and they had been inseparable the last 16 years running the wheels off of several vehicles and eating out more in 16 years than she had ever done 84 years previously, which she had started enjoying someone else finally waiting on her.

Mamie was given the name of Grouch by one of her late sons-in-law Allen many years and it stuck!  Because she was anything but a Grouch.  Her Grandchildren, Great and Great-Great Grandchildren all lovingly called her Grouch and didn’t know any other name to call her other than Grandma Grouch!

Mamie had just celebrated her 100 Birthday just short of a month ago with a Celebration of Life at Tabernacle Baptist Church with her family and close friends where she is a member.
