Margaret McPherson Lewis, 98, of Richmond, formerly of Bowling Green, died Saturday, December 17, 2022.

Born in Blacksburg to Odessa Maude and Lloyd Clarence McPherson, she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Reverend and Mrs. James O. Helsabeck in the Church Hill neighborhood of Richmond. For many years, Margaret was the personal assistant to Senator Thomas Blanton, president of Union Bank & Trust Company in Bowling Green. She had a gift for teaching, and taught shorthand at Caroline County High School for many years. She was also passionate about her work for the Virginia Tech Extension Service. She was a talented musician and served as Music Director at The Bowling Green Baptist Church for many years, where she will be remembered fondly as a friend, teacher and mentor.

The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to Linda, Elsie, Laurie and Taylor, the steadfast and tireless caregivers who were so devoted to “Miss Margaret.” We also would also like to thank Visiting Angels of Richmond and Beth Sholom Senior Living, who provided enormous support to Margaret in her later years.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Guy C. Lewis, Jr.; brothers, Lloyd C. McPherson, Jr. and Kenneth A. McPherson; and sisters, Mary M. Saunders, Virginia M. Hale, Frances M. Harrison. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Janette L. Worthington and her husband, Dr. Andrew K. Worthington; her son, James C. Lewis and his wife, Ramsay; four grandchildren, Clayton A. Worthington and wife, Mary, Jessica L. Birch and husband, Stephen, Sara L. Allen and husband, David and Haley F. Worthington; two great-granddaughters, Sallie Lewis Worthington and Margaret Scott Worthington; and many devoted nieces and nephews.

Her life will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, December 30, at Bowling Green Baptist Church, 225 N. Main St., Bowling Green, VA 22427. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.
