Margarette Deane Carter Upshaw, 88, of Bagby, died Thursday, February 9, 2023 at Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born September 15, 1934 in Powhatan, she was the daughter of the late Alvin Pratt and Ora Mann Carter. She was the widow of C. Douglas Upshaw, Sr. She graduated from Powhatan County Public Schools in 1952. She was a very accomplished pianist. In her early career she played for Red Lane Baptist Church and on the WRVA radio station. Margarette was a former employee of Yates Motor Company in Powhatan, Tidewater Telephone Company and Rappahannock Electric Coop. April 23, 1955 she married the love of her life, Carl Douglas Upshaw, Sr. She joined Shiloh United Methodist Church and became the church pianist in 1960. She became the organist for Powell Funeral Home in February 1980 and remained with David Storke at Storke Funeral Homes until she retired in 2017, after serving faithfully as organist for 37 years. She is survived by her two children, Donna Tinder (Tom) and Carl Upshaw; two grandsons, Brandon Tinder (Mary) and Bryan Tinder; and a very special great granddaughter, Kylie Tinder. She was preceded in death by a foster aunt, Dora Dean Spencer. The family will receive friends 6-8 pm Monday, February 13, 2023 at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Burial will follow at Shiloh United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Shiloh United Methodist Church, 25038 Mattaponi Trail, Milford, Va 22514.
