Former Sheriff James Francis “Jim” Gartland II passed away on May 18, 2023 at his residence in King George, Virginia.   He was born to the late Florence Blake Gartland and the late James Francis Gartland I.  Jim was proceeded in death by his brother, Michael Sheridan Gartland, and his sister, Patricia Lou Gartland-Parsons. Jim began his career in 1965 as a United States Capitol Police Officer. In 1966, he joined the Charles County Sheriff’s Office where he demonstrated exceptional dedication and rose through the ranks, eventually being appointed as Sheriff in 1986. Jim served as Sheriff of Charles County from 1986 to 1994. Aside from his law enforcement career, Jim had a passion for antique cars and was an active member of several car clubs, forming cherished friendships with fellow car enthusiasts over the years.  He will be remembered for his years of dedication and devoted service to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, his great sense of humor, and his love for cars, friends, and family. Jim is survived by his longtime companion, Cindy Baumann; son, James F. Gartland, III (Christy); daughter, Kimberly Keller; nieces, Renee Gartland and Heather Hammett; and his grandchildren, Blake Gartland, Joseph Marino, Tristian Marino, Kenleigh Keller, and Brice Keller. The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, 11089 James Madison Pkwy, King George, VA 22485 on June 1, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  Service will immediately follow the viewing.  A Celebration of Life is planned for family and close friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to Wounded Warriors and/or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Storke Funeral Home, King George is handling arrangements.
