He was the youngest of 10 siblings born to Jimmy Lewis Barnes and Lizzie Williams-Barnes. Bob was called home to glory on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, Richmond, Virginia.
Bob attended public schools in North Carolina and graduated from Speight High School in Wilson County, North Carolina. He married and relocated to Brooklyn, New York with his first wife, Fannie Artis-Barnes. Through this union three children were born; Gregory Dale Barnes; Julie Barnes-Oliver; and Adrienne Barnes. Bob worked 37 years for the New York City Board of Education. After retiring, he relocated to Virginia where he met and married Luella McField Barnes in 1995 and after that marriage dissolved, he met and married Ada M. Williams-Barnes in 2013.
Bob was well known as “DJ Bob” throughout the years due to his awesome skills as a DJ. He enjoyed DJ’ing at many events, and he loved to party as well! He loved making mixed CDs of various genres of music for family and friends to enjoy. He maintained a reputation as being a well-dressed, stylish, and dapper man. In addition, he loved to take road trips from Brooklyn to North Carolina to visit family and his grandchildren spent memorable summer vacations with Bob in Virginia. He acquired a passion for motorcycles and learned to ride after moving to Virginia. He owned many awesome cycles over the years and became king of the highway cruising with Ada, his cycle partner. He was an avid cooker and stayed abreast of the most innovative cooking gadgets on the market. A caring a giving man, he was also known as a great protector of his family and taught them to stand up for themselves as well. He was a faithful member of Glover Memorial Baptist Church, Brooklyn. Although unable to get out as much in recent years, he stayed faithfully connected with bible studies, reading, and watching his favorite televised Christian broadcasts.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Jimmy Lewis Barnes and Lizzie Williams-Barnes, daughter, Adrienne Barnes and son, Gregory Dale Barnes. He was also preceded in death by three brothers: Jessie, Douglas, and Alonzo Barnes; four sisters: Lizziemae; Minniebell; Odell and Dorothy Barnes. He leaves to mourn his companion and loving wife of 11 years, Ada M. Williams-Barnes. With utmost grief, Bob leaves his daughter, Julie Barnes-Oliver (Derrek) and their six children: Donique (Lymesha); Derrek (Erika); Dwight (Damyna); Devonte; Taysha and Juliesa Oliver. Twelve great-grandchildren: Donique, Jr.; Jaleya; Ja’Dore; Damani; Esther; Christian; “J.R.”; Dakari; Diron; Davoul; Jasmine; and Kali.
Missing him greatly are Ada’s daughters Shelly Williams-Silver; Denada Williams-Somerville and Kristy Williams-Jeter (Lance). Grand- children Courtni Somerville; Kenneth Silver (Kesha); Gregory Silver; Krystal Silver; Peter Parker, III (Chanice); Gideon Silver; Nevaeh and Larenz “LJ” Jeter. Great-grandchildren, Camille Silver; Michael Moses; Kayden Silver; Marcus Garner; and Kenzo Silver.
He is survived by siblings: Roscoe (Marjorie); William (Nancy); and sister, Ruth Barnes-Ray; Ada’s sister, Jacquelynn Scott-Fields (Marshall); and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other family members and friends gained over the years.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, June 3, 2023 at St. Stephens Church, 29346 Sparta Road, Milford, VA. 22514
