She was the youngest of eight children born to Thomas Raynor Payne and Emma Rose Quesenberry Payne (Rose). Alice Bruce attended the Dahlgren School until the eighth grade and King George High School, Virginia, before graduating from La Plata High School in Maryland. She continued her education at Union Memorial Nursing School in Baltimore graduating as a Registered Nurse. Brucie started her RN career in the hospital in her local community before turning to public health nursing where she compassionately served the communities in both Maryland and Virginia for over twenty years.
Alice Bruce met the love of her life, Samuel F. Gouldthorpe Jr (Sam), a deacon from St. Mary’s Church in Colonial Beach, VA. They were married for 56 years until Sam’s passing in 2014.
Alice Bruce is survived by three sons, Samuel Foster Gouldthorpe III (Maureen), Thomas Payne Gouldthorpe, and James Lloyd Gouldthorpe (Sherri), three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service for Mrs. Gouldthorpe at 11:00AM on Saturday April 20th at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 5486 St. Paul’s Road, Owens, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Mary Washington Hospice.
Visitation & Funeral Service Information
There will be a memorial service for Mrs. Gouldthorpe at 11:00AM on Saturday April 20th at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 5486 St. Paul’s Road, Owens, VA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Mary Washington Hospice.
