Wayne was born October 6, 1944 in Fredericksburg and was the oldest of 8 children. He graduated from King George High School and served in the US Air Force from 1963-1967 including a tour in Vietnam. He worked on the NSWC Naval Base in Dahlgren from 1967 until his retirement in 2014. He married Mary L. Gripshover in 1971 and together they raised 6 children, 18 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. He was blessed to have nieces, nephews, and other relatives that are too numerous to list, but was loved by all.
Wayne was a pillar of the community in King George and although was not a farmer by trade, he was definitely a farmer at heart. He raised beef cattle, chickens, pigs, and planted a garden big enough to feed his extended family every year. His favorite season was hay season and he spent countless hours in his tractor, often with a grandchild, or 5, piled in the cab with him. His family is comforted by the fact that he was able to do what he loved and was out working on his hay equipment until the day before his death. His loss will leave a deep hole that will be felt by family, friends, church family, and the King George community alike. Wayne’s colorful personality, unique wit, and leadership will be deeply mourned. Our family has lost a true patriarch.
