Earl Reed, of Floyd Va. formerly of Dahlgren, passed away peacefully on the 28th of May at the age of 94. Born on February 2, 1930, Earl led a life marked by dedication, service, and a passion for learning and craftsmanship. Earl began his career in service to his country, joining the Navy from 1950 to 1952 and serving honorably on the USS Macon. His pursuit of excellence led him to Virginia Tech, where he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1957. He began his Civil Service career at the Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent, Maryland from 1957 to 1961, contributing to critical advancements in naval aviation. In 1961, Earl joined the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center in St. Louis, Missouri, where he worked as an aerospace engineer for Flight Systems focusing on the Test and Evaluation phase of each program. His notable contributions to the Mercury and Gemini Space Programs during his tenure at NASA stand as a testament to his expertise and professionalism.  In September 1977, Earl transferred to Dahlgren, Virginia, where he continued his work as a mechanical engineer. Earl retired in 1989 after 33 years of service to the Department of the Navy and the United States Government. Beyond his professional achievements, Earl was a man of many talents and interests. He held a private pilots license and owned his own aircraft during the early years of his career. He was an avid woodworker, crafting beautiful grandfather clocks and even a hammer dulcimer, showcasing his skill and attention to detail. A talented musician, Earl enjoyed playing the dulcimer and was a regular attendee of the music festival in Galax. He loved outdoor activities including gardening, which brought him great joy. Earl is survived by his wife Shirley of 47 years, and many family members and friends who will miss his kindness and enthusiasm for life. A funeral service will be held at 2pm on June 4, at Storke Funeral Home in King George, Va. where family and friends will gather starting at 11am for a visitation to celebrate Earl’s life. Burial with Navy Honors will follow the service at Historyland Memorial Park, King George, VA.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to an Alzheimer’s prevention organization in Earl’s memory.
