Lieutenant (Ret.) Charles William Anning, known as Charlie or Chuck, died unexpectedly on May 16, 2024, at the age of 52. Born on October 13, 1971, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Gayle Giller Anning and Charles J. Anning. While he lived and worked all over the world, for the past 13 years, he called Mason Neck, VA, home. He completed his bachelor of science degree in instructional systems development from Southern Illinois University.

His life was dedicated to serving his country, spending 20 years in the U.S. Navy before transitioning to a civilian career with R3 Strategic Support Group and, most recently, Abaco Strategy. He began his Navy career by enlisting as an Aircrewman in 1989, specializing as an acoustic operator onboard P3s for Patrol Squadron 10 and Patrol Squadron 30, stationed out of Jacksonville, Florida. In 1997, he was stationed in Keflavik, Iceland, as a NATO liaison officer. He became a commissioned officer and served onboard the USS Portland and the USS Nicholas as a Surface Warfare Officer. He then went on to become the Officer-in-Charge of Mobile Security Detachment 23, stationed out of Little Creek, VA. He distinguished himself as an exceptional leader on several missions to Central America and the Middle East. After a deployment to Pakistan as a Security Assistance Officer, he finished his naval career as a Weapons Officer for Maritime Expeditionary Security Group 2.

Throughout his service, he exemplified dedication and excellence, earning numerous decorations, including the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Medals, Navy and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals, and Humanitarian Service Medals.

Beyond his distinguished military career, Charlie enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He was known for his monumental personality and irrepressible energy. He loved to make his children laugh. Always generous, he found fulfillment in helping others, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience with all who crossed his path.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Anning; his daughters, Elizabeth and Marjorie; his son, Charles David; his brother Jonathan; his sisters Victoria, Tiffany, and Alyssa; his nephews and niece, Timothy, Matthew, Derek, and Abby; and his mother Gayle; and father, Charles. He is predeceased by his loving grandparents.

Lieutenant (Ret.) Charles William Anning will continue to inspire all who have had the privilege of knowing him. His presence will be profoundly missed. A service in his honor will be held at Semper Fidelis Chapel, Quantico, on Monday, June 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by a repast at the National Museum of the Marine Corps from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. A committal service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Quantico National Cemetery.
