Robert Wilson Lowry, Sr., age 82, of King George, Virginia, passed away on June 17, peacefully, surrounded by his family. Robert (Bob) was born on March 30, 1942 to Carl Wilson Lowry and Nancy Estelle Lowry in Washington D.C. After Bob graduated from McLean High School, in McLean Virginia, in 1960, he went on to study Metallurgical Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. After graduating with a Master’s Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Bob worked for the Naval Surface Warfare Center (now called the Naval Support Facility Dahlgren) where he had a successful career lasting over 33 years. Doing research for the Navy allowed him to be a part of many interesting projects and among his favorites was working on a concentric canister launcher. Testing days on the range were his absolute favorite days at work. Bob was predeceased first by his mother, Nancy Estelle Lowry then his father, Carl Wilson Lowry. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Irma Lowry (Kakki); his three children, Robert Lowry, Kimberley Shuler (Steven), and Nancy Kantsios (George); his eleven grandchildren: Kassandra Brislawn (Matthew), Jonathan Kantsios, Jody Shuler, Jacob Shuler (Aaliyah), Jennah Shuler, Julianna Shuler, Michael Athenry (Georgiana), Zach Brooks, Catherine Herlig, Anna Collier (Zachary), and two great-grandchildren: Barrett and Jamie Brislawn. He is also survived by his three brothers, Ron Lowry (Marilyn), John Lowry (Svetlana), and David Lowry (Helene). In December of 1962, Bob met Irma Lee Jackson (Kakki) while on a blind date and married a year later. They spent the majority of their married life living in King George, VA. Spending time with his family was his favorite pastime. He enjoyed family vacations and traveling with Kakki. He also loved to play baseball, ski, hike, kayak, run, and fish. He was an avid reader of all things Revolutionary and Civil War. Bob also was a Master Gardener and enjoyed using his skills within the King George community. Bob loved the Lord and was a deacon at Oakland Baptist, as well as ministering to prisoners at Rappahannock Regional Jail. He was an active member of the King George Ruritans club and of Gideons International, where he was passionate about handing out Bibles and speaking in churches. In the Gideons he held several leadership positions throughout the years. Services will be held at Oakland Baptist Church in Owens, VA on July. 5, 2024 starting with a visitation at 1:00pm and celebration of life service starting at 2:00pm.
