Henry DeRosh Pollard, 84 of Mechanicsville passed away after a lengthy illness on October 19, 2024. He was born in Richmond to the late Johnnie and Harriet Harman Pollard. One of the premier slow pitch softball umpires in the sport’s history, Pollard had been the ASA deputy director of umpires since 1989.  He served as Metro Richmond/Central Virginia UIC from 1973 – 1989.  Henry was UIC of the Central Atlantic Region from 1977 – 1989.  He had been a member of the National Umpire Staff from 1977 to 2003.  He was ISF certified in 1983.  In 1986, he was selected to the National Indicator Fraternity.  In 1988, Henry was inducted into the Central Virginia ASA Hall of Fame.  He received the Wilson National Award of Excellence in 1991 along with the Tom Mason Central Atlantic Region Award.  In 1992 he was inducted into the USA Softball Hall of Fame.  He served as rule interpreter at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.  In 2004, Pollard was named Central Virginia ASA Commissioner. In 1970, after working in several other fields, Henry joined the City of Richmond Fire Department. This career included working at Engine Company 5 and Engine Company 23. Henry retired after 30 years of service as a Master Firefighter. Henry is survived by his wife of 29 years, Julie Willard Pollard; his children, Tracey Pollard McKinney (Chris), Janet Earl Pritchett (Billy), Mark D Pollard (Deanna) and Craig W. Pollard (Kristin); his grandchildren, Graham McKinney (Kim), Garrett McKinney (Kathryn), Grayson McKinney (Morgan), Will Pritchett, Jack Pritchett, Chloe Pollard, Bella Pollard St. Clair (Bryce) Anderson Pollard and Collin Pollard; his great grandchildren, Bayne William St. Clair and Suttyn Blair McKinney; his niece, Dee Seitzinger (Robert); nephew Steve Pollard (Pam) and the mother of his children, Ann Jenkins “Jenks” Pollard. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, John “Bunkie” Pollard. The family will receive friends at the Bowling Green chapel of Storke Funeral Home on Sunday, November 3rd from 2:00 – 4:00pm and 6:00 – 8:00pm. A funeral will follow on Monday, November 4th at 10:00am at Compass Christian Church, Mechanicsville. A reception will immediately follow there at the church. Burial will take place in Westhampton Memorial Park in Richmond at 2:00pm. Visitation & Funeral Service Information

The family will receive friends at the Bowling Green chapel of Storke Funeral Home on Sunday, November 3rd from 2:00 – 4:00pm and 6:00 – 8:00pm. A funeral will follow on Monday, November 4th at 10:00am at Compass Christian Church, Mechanicsville. A reception will immediately follow there at the church. Burial will take place in Westhampton Memorial Park in Richmond at 2:00pm.
