Born on October 11, 1937, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Richard lived a life of dedication, service, and passion. From a young age, he was deeply involved in the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Life Scout and being recognized as a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s national honor society. His love for scouting continued throughout his life, serving as a Scoutmaster for nearly 20 years, guiding and mentoring countless young men.
Richard proudly served in the U.S. Navy and graduated from the esteemed Naval School of Music. He further pursued his education at Trenton State College in New Jersey, earning a Master’s Degree in Music. For 35 years, he was a valued instrumental music teacher in the public schools of New Jersey, inspiring generations of students with his talent and dedication to education.
Upon retirement, Richard moved to Virginia, where his passion for music continued to flourish. He was a member of the Hanover County Concert Band, where he also served as assistant conductor, and was an active contributor to the music programs of Bowling Green Baptist Church and Milford Presbyterian Church, sharing his musical gifts with his community and church family.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judith; his sons, Richard Jr. of New Jersey and Scott of Vermont; his daughter, Kathie Martin of Trenton, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Ashleigh, Christian, Sara, and Emma; and five great-grandchildren, Katherine, TJ, Heidi, Owen, and Truly.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Milford Presbyterian Church, Milford Virginia. Burial will follow at 2:00 PM at Quantico National Memorial Cemetery.
Flowers are appreciated or donations may be made to the Hanover Community Band in Ashland, Virginia or Milford Presbyterian Church in Milford, Virginia in Richard’s memory.
Richard will be remembered for his unwavering love of family, his devotion to music and education, and his commitment to serving others through scouting and community. His legacy will live on in the lives of those he inspired and touched.
