Graduating from Loyola High School, Baltimore, in 1965, he enlisted in the United States Navy, soaring the seas on the USS Dale CG-19.   After serving four years in the Navy and seventeen years in the Navy reserves, he achieved the rank of Master Chief, all while obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland.

Gary worked supporting the Department of Defense, beginning his career in the contractor world at EG&G in Maryland, and then in Dahlgren, Virginia.  After working for several other contractors, he began his career at SENTEL Corporation, in which he worked for over 20 years, before retiring in 2006.   He viewed his biggest accomplishment to be working for and being instrumental in the development and manufacturing of the Joint Portal Shield, a Chemical and Biological Agent Detector for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines.

Gary fell in love with this little Town of Colonial Beach, Virginia, and moved his family there in 1981.  He took pride in our community by serving on the Colonial Beach Town Council for twelve years, and also serving as the treasurer of the town for a short time.  Gary was also the treasurer of the Colonial Beach Educational Foundation, which raised money to build a school in our community when it was most needed.  He went above and beyond for our school and our community.  Gary was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Eagles, VFW, and the American Legion.

Gary loved to read books, generating a list of over 1,000 books that he read since he retired. He had a love for golf, even though he wasn’t very good at it, and he enjoyed doing Sudoku puzzles and playing solitaire on the computer.  He loved his dogs Utah and Bella.  The thing he missed most in life, besides his wife, was sitting on the front porch of their river front home.
