Cary graduated from Mary Washington College as an Elementary School Teacher. For 5 years, she taught 2nd graders to read at Potomac Elementary School and managed the family farm operations for 60+ years. Cary was an avid reader, especially enjoying a good mystery. She attended the theater and museums, enjoyed traveling with her family and friends all over the world by planes, trains, ships, and automobiles. At home in King George County, Cary attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Episcopal Church Women, supporting Sunday School, Bazaars, the Op Shop and picnics.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband, William “Billy” H. Washington and Brother-In-Law Robert “Bobbie” Washington (m. Ellen); parents of Washington family niece, Dixie Lee Washington (m. Gary). Cary is survived by her three sons: William H. Washington IV (m. Pam), Thomas U. Washington Sr. (m. Cathy), and C. Thacker Washington. She has seven grandchildren: Casandra W. Philipson (m. Noah), Summer W. Richardson (m. Josh), Thomas U. Washington Jr. (m. Ashleigh), Dani W. Street (m. Josh), Elizabeth M. Washington (f. Kyle), McKensie W. Wilkins (m. Brandon), McKayla W. Lyons (m. Robbie), and 4 great grandchildren. Her sister Anne U. Doak (m. Richard), brother H. Neil Upshur and Upshur family nieces, Cary D., Schuyler D., Catherine U., Elizabeth U. and nephews Alex D., Conway U., Andrew D..
By request, the family plans to hold a joint celebration of life (for both Billy and Cary) later this Summer. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the King George Animal Shelter. Cary had a great love for all animals, especially her numerous adopted cats over the years.
