A Life Well Lived

Carolyn Mae Frye, a beacon of warmth and unwavering spirit, departed this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and steadfast devotion. Carolyn touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Carolyn was born to John Scott and Emma Byrd Scott on August 22, 1948.

Carolyn’s educational journey began with a solid foundation, graduating from Ralph Bunche High School in 1966, where she proudly cheered on her beloved Falcons and played softball and basketball. Her pursuit of knowledge continued, culminating in a certificate from Rappahannock Community College in November 1993, a testament to her lifelong commitment to growth.

On January 21, 1970, Carolyn embarked on a beautiful partnership, uniting in marriage with Willis Frye, Jr. Their bond, a testament to enduring love, served as a cornerstone for their family.

Her professional life was marked by compassion and dedication. From 1976 onward, Carolyn served the children of King George County Schools, first at the elementary school and later at the middle school. With a special tenderness, she dedicated herself to nurturing and supporting students with special needs, embracing each individual with patience and understanding. Her willingness to step in and assist whenever needed exemplified her selfless nature.

Carolyn’s faith was a guiding light in her life. At an early age she accepted Christ at Antioch Baptist Church.  Later as a devoted member of First Baptist Ambar, she served as a Deaconess and church secretary, embodying the principles of service and community.

Beyond her professional and spiritual commitments, Carolyn found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She could often be found immersed in word searches, challenging herself with digital games on her iPad, or sharing heartfelt conversations with her sisters over the phone. Her evenings were filled with the excitement of game shows like “No Whammy” and “Don’t Forget the Lyrics,” “Family Feud,” and the spectacle of “Masked Singer” and “Dancing with the Stars,” and the gripping drama of “Chicago PD.” A passionate basketball fan, she especially cherished watching her grandchildren play, her cheers echoing from the stands, as well as heckling the referees!

Her culinary talents were a source of comfort and joy, especially on Sundays when she prepared feasts of chicken, cabbage, beef and carrots, mashed potatoes and gravy, and her beloved rice pudding. A true connoisseur, she had a particular fondness for crab cakes and the comforting atmosphere of Cracker Barrel.

In her later years, Carolyn faced the challenges of dialysis with remarkable strength. She transformed her personal experience into a source of support for others, mentoring new patients and guiding them through their onboarding process with empathy and understanding.

Carolyn’s personality was as vibrant as her spirit. Known for her honesty and directness, she “kept it 100,” always sharing her knowledge and insights with those around her. She loved to be in the “know” and shared her wisdom freely.

Carolyn Mae Frye leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering kindness. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to have known her. Her memory will be cherished, and her spirit will continue to inspire.

Carolyn is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Deacon Willis Frye, Jr; and her children Brian Scott (Sonja Peyton-Scott), Alicia Frye and Crystal Frye.  Bonus son – Arnie Holmes.  Grandchildren – Deion Frye, Sydney Scott, Brianna Martin, Blair Scott, Nehemiah Frye, and Rasheed Barnes.  Siblings – Bernice Lumpkin, William Scott (Sharon), and Marian Mayer.
