John Stewart Howell, 58, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at VCU Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Hickory, North Carolina, John dedicated his life to serving others.

He spent many years as a paramedic for Wayne County and Cabell County EMS in West Virginia, providing critical care to those in need. His commitment to public service extended to the Wayne County Volunteer Fire Department, where he was an active member. Later, John transitioned to a career in corrections, working at Western Regional Jail and Peumansend Creek Regional Jail before finishing his distinguished career as a Sergeant with the Henrico County Sheriff’s Office Jail.

John is survived by his devoted sister, Regina Thomas; beloved nieces, Ashley Null (Devin) and Amber Thomas; and cherished great-nieces and nephews, Haley, Allison, Summer, Charles, Analeigh, and Ezma. He formed close friendships that became like family, including Robert and Sandy Ramsey and their sons, Robbie and Cody.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at Woodcot Farm in Ruther Glen on May 10th from 12:00 – 4:00pm. His ashes will be laid to rest at Lakewood Cemetery in Bowling Green at a later time.

John’s dedication to service, his kindness, and the impact he made on those around him will never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
