Michael (Mike) J. Hayes, Sr., 70, of Farnham, VA passed away unexpectedly Friday, March 21, 2025 in Tappahannock, VA.
Born on August 11, 1954, in Charles County, MD, Mike was the eldest of seven children. After his father’s passing in 1979, he took on the role of caregiver, helping to raise his younger siblings. In May of 1974, Mike married his sweetheart, Betty Virginia Wood, and together they built a family, eventually settling in Oak Grove, VA in 1980.
Mike had a deep, deep love for the outdoors and found great joy in hunting, fishing, and carpentry. A devoted fan, he never missed a chance to cheer on his Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Orioles, and North Carolina Tar Heels. He also had a special fondness for Chevrolet trucks, just ask anyone! A talented and dedicated Master Electrician, Mike worked in the industry for 40+ years. Above all, he cherished his family and held them close to his heart.
Mike is preceded in death by his father, J.B. Hayes; mother, Lillian Mae Pickeral Hayes; sisters, Linda Hayes, Brenda Posey, and Carol Blake; and a brother, Wilmer Hayes.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Betty V. Hayes; children, Michael J. Hayes, Jr. (Lisa), Barbara A. Schoppe (Stan), and James M. Fox (Ashlea); brothers; Dale Hayes and Ray Hayes; grandchildren, Doriann A. Westman and Kadence R. Fox; his long-time companion, Laura DeWaard; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1-3pm on Monday, March 31, 2025 at Storke Funeral Home, King George. A funeral service, officiated by Rev. Sherman Davis, will be held at 3pm followed by burial at St. Peter’s Oak Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael J. Hayes, Jr., James M. Fox, Stanley L. Schoppe, Jr., Pete Hayes, Randy Wright, and Sam Jerome.

Visitation & Funeral Service Information
The family will receive friends from 1-3pm on Monday, March 31, 2025 at Storke Funeral Home, King George. A funeral service, officiated by Rev. Sherman Davis, will be held at 3pm followed by burial at St. Peter’s Oak Grove Cemetery.
