Joyce Marie Brown, affectionately known as “Buttercup” was born on November 21, 1942, to her parents, the late Robert B. Jackson and Columbia I. Jackson, and her grandparents, the late Herman and Garnetta “Nanny” Harvey, all of King George, Virginia. She departed this life on April 7, 2025 at the age of 82.

She received her education from the Ralph Bunch High School. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church, King George, Virginia, where she enjoyed being a member of the Kitchen Club for many years and was known throughout the community for her delicious and “famous” potato salad.

Buttercup was strong, dependable, full of joy, had a loving and helpful spirit and was always ready to go shopping and eating. She received much enjoyment masterminding her crossword puzzles and viewing the baby monkey videos on YouTube.

Buttercup is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth G. “Gillie” Brown; and two children, daughter, Brenda D. Brown, and son, Gilbert L. Brown.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Kenneth C. “Vic” Brown, two daughters, Robin “Muffin” Brown-Haywood, Tracy L. Brown-Campbell (David), one step-daughter, Johanna Payne (George), eight grandchildren, Tawaan L. Brown (Danielle), Kendrick Smith, Kendra Smith, Ashley Brown, Elvin “EJ” Brown, David “Eppy” Campbell, Andrew Brown (Jincy) and Cassandra West (Nicholas), fourteen great grandchildren, one brother, Vincent “Chitney” Jackson, one sister, Garnetta “Suggie” West (Mike), one uncle, Francis “Pump” Harvey (Paula), one aunt, Elaine “Sister” Harvey-Greene, one brother-in-law, Donald Brown (Sandy), and two sister-in-laws, Vertalia Brown and Joyanne May. Buttercup also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends. Last, but not least, she also leaves behind her “ride or die”, beloved fur-baby “FiFi”, who was on her heels at every step she took.

Buttercup has always been a hard and dedicated worker facing daily tasks to ensure that she went above and beyond her routine duties. She believed that if you are going to do something, then do it right and to the best of your ability.

She worked for the Navy Surface Warfare Center located in Dahlgren, Virginia for almost 40 years. Afterwards, she accepted a temporary position with the King George County School Board, which led to a permanent position lasting for 25 years. Buttercup’s devotion to her work is beyond reproach and was admired by many.

Buttercup encountered cherished experiences with both of her custodial jobs including meeting new-found friends and co-workers, no matter their age. She finally decided to retire July 2024 after rendering custodial services for over 60 years.

Her presence in this life is truly missed, as a mother, grandmother, sister, niece, aunt, and friend.
