Corporal Manuel “Ray” Moreno, Jr. USMC, 95, of King George, VA passed away on April 17, 2025 with his family by his side.
Born in Texas, Ray served honorably in the United States Marine Corps as a flamethrower operator and answered his nation’s call during the Korean War. While engaged in the Pusan Perimeter Breakout, Ray was badly wounded which earned him the Purple Heart. Returning stateside to civilian life following his Marine Corps combat service, Ray remained a dedicated Marine and veteran.
As a means to help others and remain attached to his beloved Marine Corps, Ray was deeply invested in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2967 in Wilmington, California where he became the Post Commander. Moving to Virginia, Ray was a proud member of the King George VFW Sergeant Nicholas C. Mason Memorial Post 12202. While attached to Post 12202, Ray enjoyed mingling with children at King George Elementary School during Veterans Day visits to spread good cheer and educate children about his generation. During his visits to King George Elementary, Ray was the most popular veteran sharing numerous stories of his time in the Corps and of his early life before television, computers, and microwaves. Among other affiliations, Ray was also a lifelong member of the First Marine Division Association and the Elks Lodge 966 in San Pedro, CA, later transferring his membership to Lodge 875 in Fredericksburg, VA.
Ray deeply cherished the customs, courtesies, and traditions of the Marine Corps as well as the camaraderie of his fellow Marines holding an unwavering respect for the armed forces and his country. From his wheelchair, Ray always stood for the Marine’s Hymn and National Anthem at events with his trusted partner Helen or son Woody by his side. His life was centered around ensuring that veterans received the care and recognition they deserved.
Professionally, Ray worked as a Longshoreman and served as President of the Union.
Ray was a genuine person who treated everyone with respect and dignity. Despite facing medical challenges later in life, Ray remained a positive presence, always ready to lend a hand particularly around the house where he would help with outdoor chores, water the tomatoes, and work on other projects as he was able. Always with a good sea story and positive attitude, Ray’s presence made hard work seem simpler.
Known for his goofy, lighthearted personality, Ray loved spending time at casinos, playing poker, and was a devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Manuel & Isabella Moreno; and wife, Lorraine Moreno.
Ray is survived by his partner, Helen Biggs; daughters, Jackie Famighetti and Brenda Lopez; son, James “Woody” Biggs (Danielle); granddaughters, Debbie Mendoza, Denise Gollub, Shannon Lopez, Olivia Elkins, and Victoria Thalman; and many great-grandchildren.
