Merton Douglas Sawdy, 72, of King George, passed away on May 26, 2025 after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer.
Mert had a deep love for life and the people around him. He enjoyed going out for dinner and relaxing with friends over a drink – especially margaritas and his favorite, Ancient Age bourbon whiskey.
A true car enthusiast, Mert spent many weekends racing drag cars in Colonial Beach alongside his brothers and son. His beloved truck, “Play Toy”, was a fixture on the track, and he took great pride in taking his cherished Cobra out for a spin. When not racing, Mert and his brother Cecil enjoyed life on the river.
Mert found joy in his garage, whether he was tinkering with the guys, working on a boat, or simply sipping bourbon. He especially treasured time with his grandchildren, teaching them how to drive the boat and making memories on the water.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marian Kathryn Sawdy; his parents, Graydon and Dean Sawdy; and his brother, Cecil Sawdy.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Brian (Angelia) and Kristin (Robbie); his brother, Dennis (Lindy); and his grandchildren, Brandon, Johanah, and Pressli.
A memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, June 6, 2025 at Storke Funeral Home, King George. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Casual dress is requested. Pallbearers will be David Sawdy, John Sawdy, Tyler Reedal, Zack Moses, Robbie Trowbridge, and John McCullough.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mert’s sisters-in-law, Wendy, Donna, and Lindy, for their loving care and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (donate.cancer.org).
