Charles Hugh Stevens, Sr., age 89, of Ruther Glen passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2025 at his residence.
A native of Caroline County, he graduated from C.T. Smith High School. He was drafted into the Army in 1959 and was honorably discharged after serving a year in Korea. Upon returning home to Caroline, he resumed working at Tidewater Telephone Company and retired after 38 years from what is now Verizon.
He grew up attending Wright’s Chapel United Methodist Church and served as a lay leader. He joined Bowling Green Baptist Church in 1980 and served as deacon chairman, chairman of Buildings and Grounds, and pastoral search committees. He was a former member of West Caroline Ruritan Club and served as Zone Governor.
Charles fully embraced retirement and enjoyed hunting and fishing, traveling, annual family trips to the beach, tennis, music, theatre, and family gatherings. He was often found on the sidelines cheering at many sporting events, as well as attending school plays and awards ceremonies for both his children and grandchildren. Tending his meticulously kept flower and vegetable gardens were his pride and joy and he loved sharing his vegetables with family and friends.
Charles is survived by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 64 years, Sandra Smith Stevens; his daughter, Deirdre Stevens Skogen (Joel), and son Charles Hugh Stevens, Jr. (Lynn); his sister, Esther Stevens Jacobs, and his brother, Edwin Randolph Stevens; and his cherished grandchildren: Madeleine Grace Ownby, Charles Hugh Stevens III, and Adele Celine Stevens. He is also survived by his step-grandson Erik Joel Skogen and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents Charles Everett Stevens and Lula Allen Stevens.
