Marjorie Pitts Richardson died peacefully at age 100 on April 7, 2021, at the Hermitage, Richmond, VA.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Harry Leonard Richardson.  Survivors include daughters, Jean Smith (John) of Falls Church, VA; Carol Link (Al) of Greensboro, NC; Betty Reppert (Steve) of Mechanicsville, VA; grandchildren, Julia, Jessica, Jamie, Kevin, Thomas, and Michael; great grandchildren, Henry, Silas, Boden,  Benjamin, Penelope, Oliver, and Liliana.

A native of Caroline County, Marjorie was born May 6, 1920, the older daughter of the late Lewis George and Eula Broaddus Pitts. Valedictorian of Sparta High School, she continued her education at Madison College where she played varsity field hockey, was a member of the Scribblers’ Club, Tri Sigma Sorority, and President of the Athletic Association.  Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1941, she taught middle school science at Thomas Jefferson School in Arlington.  At the conclusion of WWII, Marjorie and Harry were married and remained in Arlington for 35 years.

Marjorie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many.  She was happiest when spending time with her family and enjoyed sharing her passion for gardening, cooking, and crafting.  As an avid reader, she was generous in passing on a good find to family and friends.  Her church involvement and faith were central to who she was.  For many years, she taught a women’s Bible study group and a young couples Sunday School class.  In retirement, she and Harry lived in Warsaw,VA,  Nags Head, NC and Richmond, Va.

A private family graveside service will be held at Salem Baptist Church, Milford, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Avenue, Richmond, VA 23228, or Salem Baptist Church, 24032 Sparta Road, Milford, VA 22514.
