Walt was a native of Bowling Green, Virginia born on October 13, 1928 to Bernard Webb Mahon and Jean Broaddus Mahon. He attended Caroline High School, class of 1946, and later graduated from the University of Richmond in the class of 1950, receiving a B.A. degree. He was president of Theta Chi Fraternity. He also is a graduate of the School of Bank Management, class of 1962, which is sponsored by Virginia Bankers Association at the University of Virginia.
Mr. Mahon joined the bank in July, 1950, but shortly volunteered for the military; serving from 1950-53 as an officer in the U.S. Air Force Air Intelligence. He returned to the bank and was elected vice president in July, 1957 and to president in October, 1965. He served as president & CEO of Union Bank & Trust until his retirement in 1991 after over forty years of service.
Active in state banking circles, Mr. Mahon served as chairman of the Regional Clearing House Association, 1957; member of the Committee on Bank Management and Research for three years, 1962-65; chairman of Group VI, Virginia Bankers Association, 1961. He further served two terms on the board of directors of the association, 1962-64, and was member of the VBA’s Committee on State Legislation for three terms, 1966-70. He was a county Key Banker of the Agricultural Committee for fifteen years and served as a legislative Key Banker since the inception.
After his retirement as CEO in 1991, Walt remained involved as a member of the bank’s executive committee and the board of directors. Today, Union Bank & Trust is known as Atlantic Union Bank.
A list of his board service includes Union Bank and Trust (President, Chairman), Virginia Banker’s Association (President), Virginia Baptist Foundation (President), Bowling Green Baptist Church (deacon) Caroline Development Corp (Treasurer, Secretary), Caroline County School Board, Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department (President), Caroline Ruritan Club, Jaycees, Mason, Easter Seals, United Way, and Lakewood Cemetery.
Walt and his late wife were generous philanthropists and contributed to institutions that reflected their interest in education, faith, history, and love for the local community. They founded The Walton & Lacy Mahon Family Legacy fund, which supports programs and services in the town of Bowling Green and throughout Caroline County in the areas of historic preservation, recreation, youth, and beautification.
Walt was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Marion Lacy Mahon, his sister, Sara Mahon Dougherty. He is survived by his daughter, Laura Mahon Nuckols of Richmond and son, Bernard Walton Mahon, Jr (Rebecca) of Fredericksburg. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Mahon Whitehead of McLean and his grandchildren, Lacy B. Nuckols, Madalyn E. Nuckols, Paige C. Nuckols, Anna B. Mahon, B. Walton Mahon, III, and Sutton W. Mahon.
The funeral service will be held 10 am, Monday, July 26, at Bowling Green Baptist Church with the burial to follow at Lakewood Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green on Sunday, July 25th from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm.
