U.S. Veteran

A local memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 5th at 3pm, at the First Congregational Church in Boxford, MA. Al will be interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to follow.

Albert (Al) Anthony Arcuni, 83, of Marblehead, MA, passed away peacefully with family at his side at The Kaplan House in Danvers, MA on May 13, 2022 after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, a patriot and a Christian. Al was born on June 1, 1938 to Gladys and Philip Arcuni in Port Chester, NY.  After graduating from Greenwich High School in 1956 he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy where he majored in Engineering. He also received an MS in Civil Engineering from RPI and a BS in Nuclear Engineering from Penn State University. Upon graduation Al served his country in the United States Navy, including assignments in Norfolk, DC, Morocco and Antarctica where he ran a nuclear power plant.  Al retired from the Navy in 1980 after achieving the rank of Commander. He continued his work in Nuclear Engineering as a civilian for both government and private entities.

Al married his childhood sweetheart Ruth Jeanne (Jeanne) Bireley (who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer in 2007) in Old Greenwich, CT in 1960.  Together they had three daughters whom he adored and cherished: Betty Jeanne (Jeanne), Kathleen Joan (Kathy) who passed away at the age of 11 from Marfan Syndrome, and Margaret Anne (Meg).

Al lived the majority of his adult life in Vienna, VA. He was a vibrant member of the Christian community at Vienna Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and was involved in various activities including youth and men’s devotional groups, mission projects, Promise Keepers and The Great Banquet.  His devotion to his church and its community was well known. His rich tenor voice, honed in various musical theater productions in high school, could be heard ringing from the pews every Sunday.

In 2008, Al moved to Marblehead to be nearer to his daughters. He was blessed to find love again and married Susan Tetreault Arcuni in 2013 with whom he shared his life in Marblehead until his passing.

Al enjoyed the outdoors – camping with the children and grandchildren, cycling, fishing, skiing and sailing.  He was an animal lover and could often be found cuddling or walking his miniature schnauzer. Al was a member of the Boston Yacht Club where he spent time on the water volunteering with the race committee.  He was an avid sports fan and especially loved watching his children and grandchildren play various sports from little league baseball and soccer to college football.

Al was a good friend and put anyone he met immediately at ease.  He welcomed everyone with a big smile and added life to any room he entered.  Al was a great breakfast or lunch date; he always sincerely wanted to know “How are you really doing?” and was eager to order a dessert with you.  He enjoyed life and spread kindness and he will be missed greatly and remembered fondly by many.

Al is survived by his wife, Susan Tetreault Arcuni; his daughter Jeanne Parker and husband Steve, his daughter Meg Huber and husband Todd; his grandchildren Robert Michael Sargent and wife Erin, John Alexander and William Albert Parker, Kathleen Elizabeth and Thomas Albert Huber; and two great-grandchildren, Sidney Jeanne and Robert Leo Sargent.

He is also survived by Susan’s family: her daughter Lisa Spaulding and husband Andrew, son Whitney Tetreault, daughter Allison Promise and husband John; and grandchildren Megan and Christina Tucker, Emily and Grace Promise.
