Captain Daniel Eubank McGlasson

August 20, 1932 - January 12, 2022

Friends are invited to a “celebration of his life” in Dan’s memory at The Army Navy Country Club on 20 August 2022. A full military burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in the future.

Captain Daniel Eubank McGlasson passed away in Arlington Hospital on 12 January 2022 after a lengthy illness.

CAPT McGlasson was born in Jacksonville, Texas 0n 20 August 1932.  He grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he was an all-star tackle for the football team and an all-star center for the basketball team and graduated from Lake Charles High School in 1950.  He attended Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana as a premed student before attending Bullis Prep School in Silver Spring, Maryland and the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.  During his first year at the Academy, he was the Captain of the Plebe football team.

After graduation from the Naval Academy, he was ordered to the USS John Hood (DD655) as the 2nd Division Officer.  Following this tour, he volunteered for submarine duty.  He was accepted and then   ordered to Submarine School, New London, Connecticut in June 1958.  Following completion of submarine school, he received orders to the USS Grampus (SSN 523).   In January 1961 he was ordered to the commissioning crew (Blue) of the nuclear submarine USS Sam Houston (SSBN 609) where he served through commissioning and two patrols before he was ordered to the Naval Academy in June of 1963 to serve as the Company Officer.   He served as the 11th and 16th Company Officer and Midshipmen Performance Officer.   He went on to serve on four additional diesel boats stationed in Key West Florida and Charleston, SC, including a tour as Commanding Officer of the USS Cutlass (SSN 478).

From August 1976 through September 1979, he participated in planning and conducting major fleet direct support exercises involving tactical C2 of surface, subsurface, and air Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) platforms while serving as Submarine Liaison Officer on COMCRUDESGRU Two staff and participated in the development of the AMERICA Battle Group Command and Control concept while deployed to the Mediterranean.

In January 1980 he was ordered to the Naval Electronic Systems Command in Arlington, VA where he served in numerous senior positions. During his five-year tour he was selected as a Communications Engineering sub-specialist and weapon systems acquisition manager (WSAM) and assigned as a Major Material Professional authorized to wear the command ashore insignia.   His tour included assignment as Major Program Manager of the Navy High Frequency Anti-Jam Program (HFAJ) and other major programs.

His awards include National Defense Medal with bronze, Meritorious Service Medal, and many meritorious achievement awards and letters of recognition from senior Navy Officers.

Dan is survived by the love of his life of over 35 years, Rosella J (RJ), his son Daniel Eubank McGlasson, Jr (Elizabeth “Beth”), his daughter Cindy Libby Green (Clarke), his daughter Channez “Chan” McQuay (Rob), his niece Mary Margaret Francez (Robert), his sister-in-law Barbara Hibbs-Clark (Kevin), Ed Tandy McGlasson (Jill), and many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

CAPT McGlasson was preceded in death by his parents Harold E. and Margaret Eubank McGlasson, his brother H. Edwin McGlasson, Junior and his wife Karen, and brothers-in-Law Bill (Mary Deceased), Chester (Judy), and Richard Hibbs and Mike Copelin (Kathleen).

He was a member of the American Legion; a lifetime member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and a member of the EAA Chapter 186; American Naval Engineers Society; and Diesel Boats Forever (DBF); and he contributed to many other organizations.

Daniel loved hunting in the marshes of south Louisiana and Mexico with his Louisiana friends and family and on the Eastern Shore of Maryland; fishing anywhere; and traveling the world both during his 34-year career in the Navy and with his wife RJ after retirement.   He was a superb navigator for his wife as they toured the United States in their Piper Arrow for 30 years.

A full military burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery after a short service at Old Post Chapel, Ft. Myer on January 26, 2024 at 10:45 am.

“Captain Dan” was a man to be remembered.  To quote many friends – “He was one of the finest gentlemen you will ever meet.”  And he was.
