Edna Mary Edmondson
September 12, 1929 - July 28, 2023
The Celebration of Life for Edna Edmondson will be held at the Colonial Beach United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 10, 2023 with a visitation from 11am to 1pm, funeral service at 1 pm, followed by fellowship with light refreshments at the church.
In true Edna fashion, please wear something colorful to Edna’s Celebration of Life. Her favorite color was purple and she definitely was a lover of all things flowers, nature, and color. It was her wish not to have black and be sad but to celebrate – to be colorful just like her in her own life.
Edna Mary Edmondson passed away Friday, July 28, 2023 at her home in Colonial Beach, Virginia. Edna was born September 12, 1929 in Washington, DC to the late Lloyd Brown Sydnor Sr. and Edna Catherine Virginia McDonald Sydnor. She grew up in the Congress Heights neighborhood in Washington DC until she married the love of her life, Clarence “Ed” Volney Edmondson, Jr. on November 11, 1958. Ed and Edna spent a glorious 30 years together when Ed passed in 1989. They had planned on retiring to the beach but that was cut short. In 2000, Edna came to Colonial Beach to “retire” to enjoy walks on the beach, traveling with friends and family, volunteering for whatever came her way, and being creative.
Edna had a colorful childhood growing up in DC. She was the oldest of three siblings who predeceased her. Lloyd Brown “Luke” Sydnor, Jr. and Betty Sydnor Wilson
Devoted mother to daughters Marlene Perez (Stevan), Karen Spurr (Dennis), and most favorite son Scott Edmondson (Lynne Phillips).
Amazing grandmother to Nina Duckworth (James), Lana Perez, Danielle Perez-Donnell (Michael), and Cassandra Perez. Great Grandmother “Gigi” (wore that title proudly) to Scarlett and Colton Duckworth. Along with many special nieces and nephews. Special friend, Shirley Gray who cared for her deeply. We appreciate all you were to Mom.
She graduated from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill with a Masters of Education. She was a teacher for Washington DC. in her early twenties.
Edna was a member of Colonial Beach United Methodist Church and a former member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Annandale, Virginia. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Stars and amazing Sunday school teacher.
Volunteer for many worthy causes in Washington DC, Fairfax, Popes Creek, and Colonial Beach. She was a Costumed Educational Interpreter for George Washington Birthplace National Monument at Popes Creek. She would teach others about the ways of life from yesteryear.
She was Director of Education for the Colonial Beach Historical Society. She spent many days at the “Museum” sharing her stories with others and helping to spearhead many of the displays and museum projects.
Edna was a town treasure, a local historian as well as really fun and funny.
Quilter, birder, historian, dancer, poet, artist, short story writer and art lover. So many talents and she gladly taught others how to quilt and create.
Loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, amazing multi-talented woman who gave of herself to all, who changed the world around her for the better, and who was truly blessed by God. We will miss her.
Edna loved flowers and animals but most of all she loved her family and friends who made her life so full.
