Ellard R. Jones

February 1, 1955 - March 18, 2024

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 21st at 2:00 pm in Carmel Baptist Church, Ruther Glen. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Ellard R. Jones, 69, of Ruther Glen, passed away Monday, March 18, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family. Born in Richmond, he grew up in Caroline and was a lifelong member of Carmel Baptist Church. Ellard had an extensive career with the telephone company, first with Contel, then GTE; finally retiring after 35 years as district manager for Verizon. Determined to remain active in his community, he worked another 10 years after retirement as a court deputy for the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office where he displayed his trademark compassion for others. This commitment to others extended through being a member of the Ladysmith Vol. Rescue Squad. Ellard had a great love of the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman When his sons were young, was active as a coach and umpire with the Caroline County Little League. His ability to make and maintain friendships enriched himself and all those who came into his life. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Deborah Hayes Jones; his sons, Justin Jones and Timothy Jones (Amber); two brothers, Alvin Jones (Diane) and Wilson Jones (Debbie); his sister, Nancy Albright (Michael), and three grandchildren: Charlie Fox Jones, Penelope Jones and Francis Jones.
