Linda Dolores Boone, the daughter of the late LCOL George M. Boone (USA) and late Lillian Wells Boone, died peacefully on 19 March in Henrico. After high school Linda enrolled in the Alexandria (VA) School of Nursing and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1969. She immediately volunteered and was commissioned in the US Army Nurse Corps. She had a strong desire to make a difference so she volunteered for service in Vietnam where she served in-country at the 95th Evacuation Hospital in Da Nang as a staff nurse in neurology followed by service as a Casualty & Receiving nurse for the 67th Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon. It was at Qui Nhon that she came into contact with Agent Orange which was on the clothing of wounded soldiers. Lieutenant Boone was awarded the Bronze Star in 1971 for meritorious service during support of ground operations. Linda returned to the states and completed the remainder of her active duty at West Point. Linda’s military awards also include the Army Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal and two Overseas Bars.

In 1971 Linda moved to Texas to continue her nursing career which would span four more decades. Those years would find her at various hospitals throughout Texas both as a staff nurse and ultimately as the Nursing Supervisor in the ICU, the Emergency Room Supervisor, or the Director of Nursing. She elected to return to Virginia in 2004 where she worked as a Neurology staff nurse and night PACU nurse at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg before retiring from nursing in 2013. Locally she actively participated in Wright’s Chapel UMC activities, the Scotchtown Chapter of the DAR and American Legion Post 221.

A Celebration of Remembrance will be held at 10am on Saturday, April 2, at Wright’s Chapel UMC in Ladysmith followed by interment of her ashes at the Wright’s Chapel Burying Ground.  She is survived by her sister, Sharon Mayberry of Temecula, CA, sister, Pamela Sharpe of Ruther Glen, VA, brother, George Boone of Sutton, VT, brother, Geoffrey Boone of West Burke, VT; three step-daughters, including Heather Long of Taylor, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews and their respective families.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Wright’s Chapel UMC, Crater Community Hospice and/or the SPCA in her memory.
