LTC McGillivray was the first leader under whom I served when I joined the Army as a brand new 1LT Judge Advocate. He set the tone for my entire career. What a great man. Extremely witty, smart, funny and dedicated to "mission first". His advice and leadership example has served me well. As I near 20 years of service, it's remarkable how many times I refer to a witty remark or observation I got from him, or share stories he told to demonstrate the sometimes absurd/hilarious reality of Army life. Most importantly, his ability to identify those things that are most important, and focus on getting those right, have helped keep me on the right track throughout my career, and share that mindset with Officers I've mentored over the years. As I have a daughter just beginning her military career as an active duty Officer, she's heard me refer to LTC McGillivray many times when she's reached out to me for advice. To her, and other young Officers in my sphere, he's become a mythical character. One of my proudest, yet strangest, moments was a few years ago when he called to welcome me to the LTC ranks. I'll never forget how proud I was to hear his affirmation that he always knew I would make it. My prayers for the Peace of Jesus to Martha, Catharine & Margaret and the entire McGillivray family. He was a great man, and I'm thankful to God for the chance to serve with him.

Martha, ever since we heard the sad news about Jim you and your family have been on our mind. We are so sorry for your loss. At the same time we have been thinking of the wonderful times we shared with you and Jim in Bloomington and the law school days. Jim was so engaging and had a sense of humor second to none. Please accept our heartfelt condolences.

While I am terribly saddened to hear of Jim's passing, I feel very honored to have known him in my capacity as a paralegal for Office of Soldiers' Counsel. Ethics Training can be so, so dry but Jim always had great illustrations and a funny story to tell that made it palatable. He always reminded me of Teddy Roosevelt, with his smile and a twinkle in his eyes. I will miss him. May his memory be a blessing!

Jim and I were plank holders with the 76th Enhanced Infantry Brigade was stood up. Sometimes referred to has the enchanted brigade. It was a new concept and we were essentially a mini-division. Jim could tell stories as many of you know. He was absolutely instrumental in establishing the combat jag for the Brigade. His active duty time and his raw intelligence were immediately apparent. There was no task to small for Jim to tackle. We had many good and memorable times in the early days of the brigade. I recall one occasion when Jim had some down time and the XO walked by finding Jim cleaning his rifle. Jim as a former Navy Jag hung out with Marines and apparently their task orientation rubbed off on him. I assure you not many of our Jag folk were caught utilizing their down time this way. Always, a smile, always ready to pitch in, always ready to make a bad situation better. He will be greatly missed.

There wasn't a story that this man could tell that I didn't want to hear. Thank you for teaching me and befriending me. The entire staff at SLS was amazing and you were a part of that magic that made it work. A short time, a long time ago, and I still tell your stories. Thank you so much.
