Remembering Bob, September 2, 2022 Lin & I got to know Bob some 14 years back in Lottsburg.I noticed the funny signs he posted on his metal storage building and stopped to ask about them and we discussed our military service years in Vietnam. He served on a supply ship there going up and down the Mekong delta to reach inland locations for which his vessel took enemy fire on multiple occasions. During those tours he was exposed to agent orange that left him with medical issues later in life and resulted in him getting some a financial stipend from Uncle Sam after he retired from Safeway. He used the extra money to help with his favorite hobby of collecting old vehicles during his yearly pilgrimage to Montana. He loved old cars and trucks not so much for their condition, but just to revel in their technological advancements and period improvements. Then he would sell or trade them for little or no profit. When he got a new find He would proudly drive up to our house to share in the nostalgia, often times he would let me take the wheel for a little spin around the neighborhood. Bob was generous to a fault with friends and organizations like the VFW and the American Legion. One instance that calls to mind was when he paid his neighbor Louis Ashton’s monthly electric bill anonymously for years after Louis’s wife, Doris, passed away and Louis lost her pension income from Levi Strauss. Louis thought the electric company was being benevolent because of his financial state. He loved his faithful Beagle dog, Cateaux (Cato), named after one of the ship’s he served on. Bob had a strict code of integrity that he adhered to. He felt it was important to support local business, especially new ones. Because of his failing health restricting his diet he loved the occasional comfort food dinners at our house and Coan Baptist’s Church holiday dinners. Bob has left an empty chasm in our community and we will miss him dearly. Affectionately, Dave & Lin Ryan
