A celebration of his life will take place at a later date

Samuel Worth Hastings, 99 of Dogue in King George passed away on Monday, May 9, 2022. Born December 22, 1922 in Portsmouth, Virginia, he was a graduate of the public schools in Norfolk and a member of the Boy Scout Troop 22. He attended the College of William and Mary, VPI Extension (now Old Dominion University). Worth joined the Navy under the V-5 program in 1943 and was commissioned a Naval Aviator and served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge, in attack squadron 153. After his release from active duty, he resumed his studies at Clemson University and was awarded a teaching fellowship at VPI to continue graduate studies. At the advent of the Korean War, he volunteered to serve as a flight instructor for the Air Force while serving in the Naval Air Reserve. Upon conclusion of the Korean hostilities, Worth returned home to Canning Farm and began farming operations in King George. He served on the Board of Directors of Southern States Coop in Fredericksburg, King George Farm Bureau, King George Planning Commission and the Tri County Soil and Water Commission. Survivors include his brother, Edward D. Hastings (Henrietta); his nieces, Beth Howell (Robert) and Laura Young (Darrel); his nephew, E. Miles Hastings (Brenda) and several great nieces and great nephews. His wishes were to be cremated and a celebration of his life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Battlefield Trust.
