George L. Spaulding, Jr.

December 7, 1936 - November 4, 2023

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 12th at 3:00pm in Calvary Baptist Church, Bowling Green. The family will receive friends at the church, one hour prior to the service. After burial in Lakewood Cemetery, a reception will be held at the church. All of George’s former football players in attendance will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, “Operation Christmas Child”, P,O. Box 294., Bowling Green, Va. 22427.

George L. Spaulding, Jr., 86, of Bowling Green passed away at home on Saturday, November 4, 2023. Born in Dingess, West Virginia, he began his 33-year teaching and coaching career in Williamsburg, Virginia at James Blair High School in 1958 where he coached basketball, tennis, football, and baseball achieving state championships in tennis and basketball. Moving to Caroline County in 1971, he taught biology and physical education, coached tennis and football, and was Athletic Director at Bowling Green Senior and Caroline High Schools until retiring. In football, he never had a losing season and competed for state championships. George served on the Bowling Green Town Council for years and was elected to the Caroline County School Board in 1995 where he served the community until a month ago. He was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church as a deacon and long time Sunday school teacher. He also worked part time for Storke Funeral Home for over 20 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia “Pat” Spaulding. Survivors include his wife, Elisabeth Spaulding; daughters, Karen Epley (James) of Fredericksburg and Kathryn Spaulding of Atlanta, sisters, Deanna Ergenbright of Midlothian, and Nancy Ball of Charleston, WV., grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
