Gosh, it saddened my heart when I happened upon this when just searching for some of my “ole” Pluto deli friends/ co-worker this past week. I use to work with Jimmy and Ray back at Pluto Deli in the mid/late 70’s. It was the first real job I had besides delivering newspapers for the Washington Post, and it was a minimum wage job starting at $2.35 an hour. Working at Pluto Deli was like the work family you knew was there. There was Kate P. who was like the over watching female in the house that took customers’ orders and always teased me about my (14/15 yrs old ) pre-puberty and then puberty growing up, and then there was Mano and Saed who were Persian let’s just say that) who moved to the US before any of Shaw of I stuff started. They would call me “Mickey Mouse” teasing of course which was always funny in their broken English accents. Mani R, who worked at the cash register was like an uncle who kept everyone in check. Along with my big brother Larry who ran the place. Ray and Jimmy as brothers and Rally B. who were both jokesters and who are like older brothers were always figuring out was to keep me on my toes. From putting meat ball sub under me when I hopped up on the back worktable to eating my lunch to teasing me about my latest GF in HS. Which was all good fun. I remember Jimmy as a fun and intelligent and go get it done kind of guy. From showing me how he textured the ceiling in his apartment over by Iverson mall shopping center to helping build the second Pluto Deli at 20th and K street NW DC. After we moved out of the first Pluto on the 18th and M, is when Jimmy had moved on to the carpentry trade and was on to roofing and his trade for life. Jimmy and Ray along with the whole Pluto Deli family were a life experience a teenager would hope to grow up in. After my 4 years at the deli, I followed my other brother Ray to join the AF and them my own career/life took off for 22 plus years. I can credit the demanding work ethic I have back to the Pluto Deli family I had back in the seventies and to the Leyland brothers and all the good people I work with. I hope this provides some insight to the Leyland family on how much both Jimmy and Ray had on my life and the folks around them both at the Deli and the other folks they worked with in roofing and the building profession. I’ve attached a picture of the Pluto Deli family that I found in some of my own pictures going back to the 70s when my brother got married and Jimmy, Roslyn, Ray, “Bubbles” and the Pluto Family were all there. For some odd reason I did not make it in this picture but either I was taking it or more than likely I was at the bar. To the Leyland family and all those who knew Jimmy, my deepest condolences, and my prayers in this difficult time. Thoughts and prayer, Rich Harris
