Augusta “Gussie” Carey, 94, of King George, passed away at home on May 19, 2022.  She was a devoted mother, wife, aunt and friend who made her home in King George, VA for over 30 years.

She was born on September 4, 1927 in Washington, DC to Agostino and Raffaiella DeGiorgi.  She was predeceased by her siblings Julius, Marie, John, Dolores, Josephine, Angela, Raphaella, Francis and Salvatore; and by her husband of 51 years Jim, her son Jimmy and her best friend for over 85 years Helen Bovello.  She is survived by her daughter Patricia “Trish” Carey and numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends.

Prior to moving to King George, she was a secretary to the chaplain service at Arlington National Cemetery.  All her life Gussie was known for her cooking and baking.  Holidays included lasagna with the full turkey dinner.  You hadn’t lived til you had a Christmas fruit cake heavily doctored with her favorite whiskey.  No doctor visit was complete until she handed over some hot rolls fresh out of the oven.

Family members remember looking for cakes coming through the mail with assembly instructions.  Memorial Day was highlighted with crabs and a 3 layer strawberry shortcake with 2 inch high strawberries.  She was one of a kind; you were never sure what was going to happen if she was there.

Viewing will be Tuesday, May 24 from 2 to 4pm and from 6 to 8pm at Storke Funeral Home.  Requiem mass will be on Wednesday May 25 at St. Anthony of Padua at 11am.  Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
