John Elliot Whitfield

April 8, 1965 - October 24, 2022

The family will receive friends at the Bowling Green chapel of Storke Funeral Home Friday, October 28th from 6:00 – 8:00pm. A funeral service will follow on Saturday, October 29th at 3:00pm in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church 823 Water Street Port Royal VA 22535.

John Elliot Whitfield, son of the late Harold E. Whitfield, Sr. and Laura M. Carey was born April 8, 1965 in Chicago, Illinois. He was a graduate of Kenwood Academy High School and received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Mass Communications/Journalism from the University of Illinois in 1986. He later moved to Washington, DC where he served in the federal government for 30 years. As a federal employee and senior contract officer, he worked for the following government agencies GSA, Department of Commerce, NOAA and the Department of Homeland Security in the Immigration, Customs and Enforcement Division. During his tenure at ICE he devoted countless hours of dedication and service to the federal government’s mission. John’s passion and creative interest motivated him to pursue his dream as a screenwriter having written numerous scripts, graphic novels and short stories registering his copy rights with the Library of Congress and the Writers Guild of America West. John’s passion for film as a screenwriter allowed him to attend the Cannes Film Festival, the Vancover Film Festival, CineVegas Film Festival and the Academy Awards on multiple occasions. While attending the University of Illinois John published weekly articles as the film critic for the Daily Illini the University student newspaper. He was a beautiful person with a magnetic smile. If he could help you he would. John enjoyed travel, the arts, music and singing. He loved his family and friends. Generous always willing to help.  John was a straight shooter. He told it like it was.  A true star has left our universe. Till we meet again, with a bottle of Chardonnay. His remarkable life will forever be cherished in the lives of his mother, Laura M. Carey of Port Royal, VA and his brothers: Harold E. Whitfield, Jr. (Zahra Buck-Whitfield) of Houston, Texas, and David L. Whitfield of Annapolis, Maryland. He is also survived by a host of devoted cousins, Holly Smith his overseas traveling companion, Sharyn Shields of Atlanta and Veronica Whitby-Cosey of Chicago and numerous family and friends.
