Burial Sunday, March 24th at 2:00pm in Cedar Falls United Methodist Church Cemetery, Asheboro NC

Joseph Christopher “Joey” Hancock, 61, of Bowling Green passed away Monday, March 11, 2019 in Mary Washington Hospital.

Born in Asheboro, North Carolina, Joey was active in Scouting for most of his life, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout and going on to become an employee of the Boy Scouts of America as a District Scout Executive. It was this job that brought him to Caroline. He continued to serve as a volunteer in the Scouts even as he discovered that teaching was his true vocation. He taught for 21 years in the Caroline County Public Schools. He was a member of St. Asaph’s Episcopal Church in Bowling Green, where he had recently completed a term as Senior Warden of the Vestry. He was also a longtime member and past president of the Caroline Ruritan Club and was a staple volunteer at its two annual fundraisers, the Fish Fry and Brunswick Stew sale. He also volunteered at the church’s fundraisers, including its annual Oyster Roast.

Joey is survived by his wife Kathy Bortz Hancock; his son Chris Hancock (Susan); his mother, Jewell Hancock; his uncles and aunts, Eddie and Sharon Ruth, Steve and Susan Nance and Wilbert and Shirley Hancock; his brothers in law, David Young, Jay Bortz and Gary Ralston and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Hancock.

The family will receive friends at the Bowling Green chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Thursday, March 14th from 6:00 – 8:00pm. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 15th at 11:00 am in Trinity Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, with a reception to follow at Bowling Green Baptist Church. Burial will follow on Sunday, March 24th at 2:00pm in Cedar Falls United Methodist Church Cemetery, Asheboro NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Asaph’s Episcopal Church. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.storkefuneralhome.com
